RED 1 Xpress is an innovative passenger airline, strategically positioned to bring the low cost, low fare revolution to the Nigerian people and Africa’s most dynamic region. RED 1 was founded in 2003 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of RED 1 Investments Ltd. The airline is in the ramp-up stages, and set for service in late Summer 2009. We will revolutionize air travel by providing superior value to our customers and keeping our crew members (read employees!) happy!!

RED 1 will serve the main Nigerian cities and key secondary markets. Domestic flights will begin in the Summer of 2009. Six brand new ATR 72-500s have been ordered and optioned and represent an investment of US$ 100+ million. RED 1’s Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer is C. Dikko Nwachukwu.

Safety is our number 1 priority at RED 1. We have put in place many processes and procedures to ensure that our customers arrive at their destinations safely.
That is why we have chosen to enter the market with brand new ATR 72-500 aircraft. It is not just the most comfortable or most advanced aircraft in its class, but the configuration chosen by RED 1 includes the use of sophisticated avionics and technology that provide our crew with the best tools on the market.
In addition, our highly trained crew, staff and maintenance organizations will ensure the airworthiness of the aircraft.

Where we will be flying

Initially, RED 1 will serve large metropolitan markets of Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, and some of the under served secondary markets, such as Yola, Calabar, Benin, Enugu, Maiduguri and Ibadan, for example.
Within 5 years, we aim to be flying to most airports in Nigeria and to also connect the main cities of Nigeria with the rest of West Africa, linking these markets with multiple, non-stop, daily services.

Why Nigeria and then West Africa?

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa & the second biggest economy but only 2% of its inhabitants fly regularly. Air tickets cost, on average, 150-300% more than in the USA or Europe over comparative distances.

We aim to increase the overall size of the air travel market by operating efficiently, this will enable us to offer lower fares and encourage a good chunk of the 60 million passengers traveling by other means of transport to switch to air travel, preferably on RED 1.

ATR 72-500, the most advanced and comfortable turbo prop in its class

RED 1’s ATR 72-500 will have 72 seats arranged in four seats per row, two on either side of the aisle, eschewing the infamous center seat. In other words, the only difficulty will be in selecting a window seat or aisle seat. All the seats will be upholstered in leather.

The interior cabin has a lot of space and is comparable to that of the 737 without the middle seat.
